The official word from Punxsutawney

February 2, 2007

Phil sign (AP)

Well, it’s official! Early spring is on the way, so says the groundhog!

From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

The Germans believed that if a hibernating animal cast a shadow on Feb. 2 — the Christian holiday of Candlemas — winter would last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early.

Phil (ap)Phil’s official forecast as read this morning at sunrise at Gobbler’s Knob:

El Nino has caused high winds, heavy snow, ice and freezing temperatures in the west.
Here in the East with much mild winter weather we have been blessed.

Global warming has caused a great debate.
This mild winter makes it seem just great.

On this Groundhog Day we think of one thing.
Will we have winter or will we have spring?

On Gobbler’s Knob I see no shadow today.
I predict that early spring is on the way.

Ironically, the “pretenders” to Phil’s throne locally in Lancaster and York predict six more weeks of winter. Hard Drive Life will be keeping track of this battle for ‘hog supremacy! That Octoraro Orphie is such a fraud!

Ever wonder how to become a ‘Phil’ handler? The Trib interviews Ben Hughes and John Griffiths, members of the Inner Circle in Punxsutawney.

Also, to help celebrate the day, check out this “thriller” remix of the Groundhog Day movie:
