Wearable tech: The new “puffy” coat

January 24, 2007

So, were you like me watching the Chicago Bears – New Orleans Saints NFC title game Sunday, and looking at Bears’ head coach Lovie Smith thinking “Hey coach, what’s that extra nipple on your coat?”

Lovie with air valve (Getty)Probably not, but then again, I’m distracted by shiny objects… At first glance, I thought it was a hole for earphones or something, like some coats have for iPods.

Uni Watch, a favorite feature on ESPN Page 2, has the answer. It’s a new winter-weather coat from Reebok called the “Pump Sideline Jacket” that allows wearers to inflate the coat to add extra insulation. It’s not available for sale to the public yet.

According to an interview with a Reebok spokesperson, the coat’s pumps are located in the pockets, and you press the “nipple” on the coat collar to release excess air. The air pockets in the coat heat up with body warmth from the wearer. Nice.

But what troubles me: You could look awfully obscene “pumping” your pockets. And an unexplained “hissing” sound from the coat’s air release could have people sniffing around, if you know what I mean…

From Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas:

So there you have it. Inflatable jackets are nothing new, natch (especially if you’ve seen Sleeper), and neither are extra nipples. But those in-pocket pumps are pretty intriguing. Given that most NFL head coaches are total control freaks who are wound tighter than a drum, it’s not hard to imagine some of these guys getting in the habit of reflexively pumping the “actuator” every time there’s an interception or a missed tackle, until they blow up like the Michelin Man. Might give new meaning to the term “blowhard.”

Now, how much lighter can I make myself if I fill the coat with helium?

This jacket is an imposter! Innovative Sports has been making heated sideline jackets for coaches that are actually heated… since 2003!. Nice try though. Search goolge or google video for heated jacket or heated clothing. Or try going to or . It all leads right back to Innovative Sports, and the first heated jacket they ever made was a heated sideline jacket. Pretty good bet the Reebok Pump Jacket looses the Pepsi challange to the Innovative Sports heated jacket. Taste for yourself!

For sure this is accurate! Plus wouldn’t you rather look at Jennie Finch in this jacket instead of Lovie Smith?! Please… no contest. Looks like IS makes a sweet heated sleeve for pitchers located too at Lots of pictures of Jennie!
