Finally, Saddam on a rope
At 10:14 p.m. EST Friday, MSNBC is reporting that Saddam Hussein, former dictator of Iraq, has been executed by hanging (at 6 a.m. Baghdad time) for the deaths of 148 Shiites in 1982.
As pockets of Iraqi ex-patroits celebrate in communities in America and around the world, I hope I can speak for this blog, and the world, as I say … good riddance!
From the MSNBC report:
BAGHDAD, Iraq – Three years after he was hauled from a hole in the ground by pursuing U.S. forces, Saddam Hussein was hanged Saturday under a sentence imposed by an Iraqi court, al-Hurra TV, al-Arabiya and Sky News TV reported.
The deposed president was found guilty over the killing of 148 members of the Shiite population of the town of Dujail after militants tried to assassinate him there in 1982, during Iraq’s war with Shiite Iran.
The official witnesses to his execution gathered Friday in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone in final preparation for his hanging, as state television broadcast footage of his regime’s atrocities.
[UPDATE 1: Fox News TV is reporting that there was in fact a videographer and still cameraman present at the execution of Saddam Hussein. Whether the video will be released is yet unknown. The commentators are discussing the fact that the Iraqi government has televised other minor executions recently. Look out YouTube! Here comes Hussein!]
More updates after the break, including video clips….
[UPDATE 2: Drudge Report gives the scorecard on the network’s announcement:
CNN Broke at 10:06... NBC first broadcast net to report execution of Hussein at 10:14 pm, ET -- CBS went up at 10:18 -- ABC up at 10:25...]
[UPDATE 3: A YouTube poster put up this funny curious video of an MSNBC anchor choking during her Saddam death watch update:
For more on the execution, check out the budding Wikipedia page on the event…good stuff…]
[UPDATE 4: Pictures of the execution are now starting to come out on photo wire services, and video clips are also expected. One recent post I thought was poignant was Angeleno’s View of the World blog, who is posting the video clip from CNN of Saddam walking to the gallows.
I’ve posted the clip below, which stops short of showing the actual fall or his body dangling, but does show Saddam being set up for the noose. Other sites are pulling the video as its being posted.
Angeleno makes note of CNN’s warnings on TV that they were trying to be sensitive with Saddam’s gruesome execution video that was shown on Arab TV, yet on CNN’s on-demand video section (on some digital cable networks), there is still the video that terrorists took, showing one of their snipers killing a U.S. serviceman in Iraq.
From the post:
CNN is broadcasting for the enemy directly into American homes. Anderson Cooper even had the gall to state to the Iraqi Deputy Ambassador to the U.N. that his government was a “puppet government” set up by the United States. Earlier commentator Jon Alterman said that the trial and execution of Saddam was entirely run by the U.S. Military and the Bush administration! Outrageous!
Newsweek has posted an interview with Saddam’s execution videographer, who said the execution group was hailed as heroes upon their return to the Green Zone as dawn was breaking.
