Racist Kramer pushing Seinfeld DVD set sales?

November 30, 2006

Seinfeld season sevenSo, you’d think that the announced boycott of Seinfeld by Jesse Jackson and all the negative press surrounding Michael “Kramer” Richards’ n-word-laced rant at a comedy club and the haphazard apology would crush the newly-released Seinfeld season 7 DVD box set.

Uhhh… No.

Don Kaplan of the New York Post reports that the set is selling like hotcakes at a bunch of online retailers:

Season 7 of the popular sitcom is outselling the Season 6 set (released on the same day last year) by more than 75 percent, and more than 90 percent over season 5 at some online DVD retailers, according to

On Barnes and Nobel’s Web site, the DVD set is the sixth-best selling and Amazon ranks it in 12th place.

“I think the only explanation that could be is that there’s a Kramer curiosity factor,” says Dr. Robert Thompson, director of Syracuse University’s Center for the Study of Popular Television.

“I can understand that, after what happened, there’s a resurgent interest in ‘Seinfeld,’ and that seems to be expressing itself through people watching the show more and buying more DVDs.

“Boy, is it ever weird to watch ‘Seinfeld’ now,” Thompson added.

I wonder if holiday season shopping is causing this spike?  Or maybe because the Soup Nazi episode is in this set?  That’s my favorite episode!

That should help Richards pay that $6 million donation to charity — $1 mil for every letter of the n-word — that was requested of him by the Laugh Factory owners.   BTW….they have now outright banned the use of the racial slur, according to Buzzgrinder. And he still needs to deal with a potential lawsuit from his hecklers, who appeared on the Today show.

Not bad compensation for interrupting a comedian, huh?

Anyone actually thinking that a boycott of Seinfeld would work is beyond fucking retarded. Of all the middle class white folks out there that made it as popular as it is, how many of them really give a shit that Richards offended the black community? Here’s a hint folks: none.

Boycotts don’t work anymore in America, IMHO. Not enough clout behind any group today to make one work.

Unless, all the Britney Spears crotch-shot seekers walk away from their PCs in protest, then maybe I’d stop writing about that…. LOL!
