Kramer goes crazy!

November 20, 2006

Was Michael Richards out drinking with Mel Gibson? has found video of a comedy club appearance by the former Seinfeld star shouting down a few black hecklers using racist language and the n-word last Friday night in Los Angeles.

A link to the clip is here (WARNING: PG-13 video).

You can also hear the audience muttering to themselves on the audio track while the shouting match ensued, whether Richards was serious or just doing a bit. In any event, most of the crowd walked out of Richards’ set.

This again illustrates the power of Internet video, that if someone has a cell phone or a digital camera, your actions will be on YouTube in a matter of hours.

But it will also get you back doing movies like “UHF” in a matter of days.

BTW, TMZ does have some other great celebrity stories today, like more on the K-Fed/Britney custody battle, Oprah’s esoteric jab at Tom Cruise for not inviting her to his wedding to Katie Holmes (congrats!), and Britney Spears dropping her pants with Paris Hilton in Vegas (“That’s hot,” said Hilton, maybe…).

All this, and I choose the washed-up comedian/TV star to blog about. Harumph!

[UPDATE: Richards reportedly told CNN off-air that “he felt sorry for what had happened and had made amends,” according to the Associated Press (link).

I smell a “The More You Know” commerical coming! He’s already done one, a “teacher tribute,” in the past.]

[SECOND UPDATE: The Laugh Factory, the comedy club that Richards performed at last Friday, announced that he is banned from the chain of clubs until he apologizes to the black community for his racist remarks. The owner of the club, Paul Rodriguez, a famous Hispanic comedian known for using Hispanic racial insults in his routines, broke the news to the media. Now THAT’S irony.

Rodriguez talked to the AP:

Comic Paul Rodriguez, who was at the club, said he thought Richards’ remarks crossed the line.

“Once the word comes out of your mouth and you don’t happen to be African-American, then you have a whole lot of explaining,” he said. “Freedom of speech has its limitations and I think Michael Richards found those limitations.”]

[THIRD UPDATE: Richards was on the Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday night to apologize for his tirade with former co-star Jerry Seinfeld giving him moral support. Came off sort of shaky.  My thoughts on this are linked here. ]
