More Diet Coke + Mentos = More F U N!

October 31, 2006

The Mentos geyser guys from Eepybird.comIf you haven’t witnessed the viral web phenomenon of dropping a few Mentos mint candies into a 2-liter bottle of Diet Coke, try it.

But make sure you’re outside with plenty of splash space, else your co-worker in the next cubicle may be a tad upset at being drenched with soda.

The candies, due to their porous surface and ingredients, cause the soda to release its carbonation in an explosive fashion, blasting the soda fizz up and out of the bottleneck. The Discovery Channel show, Mythbusters, did a superb job explaining the phenomenon, while trying to set a record for geyser height (I think they cleared 34 feet).

The originators of this gimmick are a duo from Maine, featured on Eepybird.com. They’ve even been on Letterman with their 128 choreographed carbonated geysers.

Now, they are back with “Experiment 214,” a “domino effect” of geysers that set off even more geysers in a long chain.

Lots more of these “viral” web fads to come I’m sure. I’ll be sure to make you aware of them, so that if kids ever figure out how to convert this Mentos-Coke knowledge into a prank, you won’t get fooled.
Too late. The kids have figured it out! But it does makes a pretty impressive science fair project.
